TLC: Changing lives through tennis

Access and opportunity have been at the core of Golden Gate Park Tennis Center since the very beginning. For 124 years San Franciscans from all walks of life have played there, honing their skills, learning life lessons, and building community with fellow citizens no matter their background or socioeconomic status.

That’s why we find it so fitting that the Tennis & Learning Center (TLC) will have a new home at the renovated GGPTC. Now in its fourth year, TLC is an out-of-school-time youth development program currently serving 75 elementary students from some of the city’s most underserved neighborhoods—Portola, Western Addition and Chinatown—with a fourth site opening this year in Bayview Hunter’s Point. The SF Rec & Park program works with families and neighborhood schools to provide personalized homework help, tutoring support and, of course, tennis instruction.

When the GGPTC renovation is complete, students who “graduate” from the elementary school TLC programs will come to this iconic facility where they will continue to receive academic support— in a dedicated classroom in the new clubhouse no less—and improve their tennis skills on the courts.

Says one grateful parent: “I am very appreciative of TLC and their very friendly, family-like staff. My daughter has gone up three reading levels and is constantly with a book, excited about tennis and happy that her homework is improving.”
