Have you heard of the Universal Tennis Rating?

What is the biggest obstacle to people playing more tennis? According to the folks at Universal Tennis Rating, or UTR, it’s the difficulty of finding players at your level and somewhere to play in your local community.

To help players find their “perfect tennis match” Virginia tennis pro Dave Howell launched UTR in 2008, creating a global standard for all tennis players, regardless of age, gender or level.

About a year and a half ago a group of investors, including Larry Ellison from Oracle, bought the company and began to expand its offerings to help build vibrancy in local tennis communities.

With their stated mission of “making tennis more affordable, accessible & fun for everyone, everywhere,” UTR is beginning to host match play events and has launched a web interface that allows anyone to create their own tennis events.

The Universal Tennis Rating

UTR rates all players regardless of age, gender or location on the same 16-point scale. It is the world's only purely results-based rating system in tennis and is used by everyone from the newest players to the pros. UTR is dynamic and grows with you as you play, so you can track your progress in real time. When you have a UTR, you can know your level, find and organize level-based play, grow your tennis network, and connect with players in your local community and around the world. UTR Bay Area Tennis Events

UTR also hosts Verified UTR Match Play events, like the one on June 15th at Menlo-Atherton High School. It was designed to be a great opportunity for players to get rated or improve their Verified UTR - and of course to get some great tennis play! It was a co-ed singles tournament and all scores counted toward Verified UTR.
