Grant supports tennis programs for underserved youth
The Olympic Club Foundation has given the Tennis Coalition of San Francisco a $100,000 grant to support the renovation of the Golden Gate Park Tennis Center (GGPTC). The funds will be put toward continued development of programs that target underserved youth.
SF Rec & Parks Department’s preeminent program, known as the Tennis and Learning Center (TLC), is an after-school model designed to serve children in San Francisco’s most impacted communities by promoting academic achievement, health and wellness, and social/emotional development through the sport of tennis. This program is motivated by the desire to provide underserved youth with organized recreation opportunities and educational support not otherwise readily available.
“The Olympic Club Foundation is singularly focused on (and committed to) empowering underserved youth by supporting the growth and proliferation of organized sports programs throughout the Bay Area," says David McCallum, Olympic Club Foundation board member. "Unfortunately, the grim reality is that youth sports is increasingly becoming a 'pay to play' situation. In a way, our mission is to remedy that situation one organization at a time, making sure the underserved get an opportunity to participate.”
“An impactful program like TLC will not be possible without the classroom space and youth courts that will be developed as part of the GGPTC renovation project,” says Tennis Coalition Executive Director Julie Exley. “We thank the Olympic Club Foundation for their early support which we are sure will inspire others to give as generously.”
The GGPTC Capital Campaign is being spearheaded by the Tennis Coalition in partnership with the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department (RPD) and the Tennis Coalition’s fiscal sponsor, the San Francisco Parks Alliance (SFPA).
