Victoria and Jim Sutton share why they give to the Campaign for Golden Gate Park Tennis Center
We have made the Campaign for Golden Gate Park Tennis Center a priority in our giving and one of our most significant charitable gifts to date.
The project speaks to our family, the City and the sport on so many levels. Since moving to San Francisco in the mid-80s, we have taken full advantage of the beautiful neighborhood courts throughout the City – waiting in the fog at Moscone Playground and Dolores Park, marveling at the views from Alta Plaza and Alice Marble, and playing USTA matches at the “over-loved” Golden Gate Park courts.
Our three children all learned to play on the Mt. Lake Park courts and took summer camps at GGPTC under Lou's magnanimous and magnificent tutelage. Our oldest son James went on to be the team captain at Lowell High School and won the all-City doubles championship at the Golden Gate Park courts, while we cheered from the weathered bleachers. (Splinters in our backsides were among the souvenirs from that day!)
GGPTC was once a jewel in the crown of San Francisco’s public parks, but has crumbled into vintage shabbiness and become more dangerous than endearing. It is therefore time for every tennis player in the City to step up to the plate and help usher the courts into lasting integrity and style for the next 100 years.
